What is coaching?
Coaching is a process that provides objectivity and feedback critical for growth. It can prevent small deficits from growing into bigger problems that drain individuals of time and energy. Edge Coaching focuses on three aspects:
- Increasing awareness
- Providing tools for change
- Adding accountability

Coaching Questions (FAQ)
What should I look for in a coach?
Do your due diligence and take the time to research your coach. Read their biography, spend time on their website and look for reviews. Additionally, find out about their coaching certification and experience to help assure you are making an informed decision. But ultimately, find a coach that resonates with you since the two of you will be spending time together.
What are the benefits of coaching?
Coaching has the ability to motivate a person to see where valuable changes can be made in their life. A coach is the change agent that assists clients in seeing things that have previously been hidden. This difference results in greater success.
Here’s a list of potential benefits we see in our clients at Edge Coaching:
~ Increased motivation
~ Proactive thinking
~ Goal setting and achieving
~ Renewed purpose
~ Direction in life
~ Positive behavior changes
~ Clarity of objectives
~ Personal and professional growth
What makes a person a candidate for executive coaching?
We see two different types of executive coaching clients- individuals who work for themselves and individuals who work within an organization. They typically are in supervision and leadership positions.
At Edge Coaching, we have worked with a range of executive clients from young emerging leaders to senior staff. These individuals either self-select or are referred by their company to begin the six month executive coaching process.
Our executive coaching clients consistently report how valuable the process is for their growth as a leader.
Who uses personal coaching?
For personal coaching, we see a wide variety of clients. Examples include college students and recent graduates looking for direction, working professionals who are dealing with issues at home or at their job, men and women seeking healthier relationships, and individuals preparing for a career change or retirement. Anything standing in the way of a person’s happiness and success are topics for coaching!
Do you work with clients outside of North Carolina?
Absolutely. Phone sessions are available for clients living in the United States and Canada. Additionally, Michelle Ellwanger travels to facilitate corporate retreats, give speaking presentations and provide coaching certification workshops.
Do you offer single coaching sessions?
We do not offer single coaching sessions. Coaching is about developing a relationship and taking the time needed to be successful with achieving your goals. A single session is not fair to either the client or the coach. This is why we ask our clients to commit to the coaching process. We do offer initial phone consultations to assure a good match before beginning services.
Do you provide employee coaching?
We do work for companies needing employee coaching. For employee coaching to be successful, we ask three questions suggested by executive coach Marshall Goldsmith:
1) Is the change the company is looking for behavioral? If the change needed is ethical or intellectual, coaching will not work.
2) Is the employee willing to change? If the employee does not see a reason to change and does not care, change is less likely to occur and coaching results will be compromised.
3) Is the company willing to give the employee a fair chance? If coaching is only being used as a formality and the company already plans on terminating the employee, then coaching is not being used for its intended purpose.
If yes is the answer to all three above questions, employee coaching can be highly successful. Feel free to give us a call to discuss your needs.
Explain the difference between coaching and counseling?
Coaching is about setting and achieving goals in the present moment. It is what functional driven individuals use to be more successful.
Counseling is about healing the past. It typically uses a diagnosis and treats a mental health concern like depression or anxiety.
If a coach determines a client has counseling needs, they will discuss this with the client and then refer for appropriate counseling based services.
